Black Cats, Superstitions, and Halloween

At the shelters, rescues, and Humane Society black cats often get overlooked. Black cats (and black dogs) are more difficult to find homes for than any other type. A small percentage of this can be that it is more difficult to get good detailed images of all black pets just because of what happens with the light. However, this is just a small percentage of rescues so what about all the other black cats?
There are many superstitions about black cats that have been passed on over the centuries. They are ALL sus! They are ALL bogus, wrong, dumb, way off and ridiculous. We have had many black cats both as rescues and as family members. I have been around all kinds of black cats in all types of scenarios and have NEVER had ANY issues with them. It’s simple. There is no debate. There are not two sides to this discussion. ALL black cat superstitions are a bunch of crap!
Black cats are just a color of cat. Just like there are white cats, grey cats, tan cats, and so on. They are just like all the other cats. Their color just happens to be black. They are just as lovable, cuddly, funny, and endearing as any other cat. One of my absolute best friends ever is Dexter. He is one of the most gorgeous cats I have ever seen. His personality is off the charts amazing. He just happens to be black. Everybody who meets him is smitten with his wonderful and amazing personality.
Unfortunately, there are some messed up people out there who are mean to animals. Cats seem to be a prime target for harm and cruelty. It’s even worse around Halloween especially for black cats. Whenever we have had any black cats for adoption we do not advertise them around Halloween. It’s just too risky. In fact, we have never adopted out a pet to anyone without doing a home check first. If something seems off or we get a bad feeling about the people or the situation we do NOT leave the cats there. We take them back home and keep looking.
ALL pets deserve a safe and loving home. Some people just don’t get how to properly take care of a pet. Others are just looking for food for their snake or a practice animal for their sick and illegal dog fighting club.
So the next time you encounter a black cat treat just like any other or better yet give them a little extra attention. They deserve it.
