Brown Bagging It Cat Style

In a previous post I mentioned how Squish enjoys paper grocery bags. This is actually a favorite activity for many of our cats. I decided that I should do an entire post just on this topic.

Oliver and Squish enjoying their bags.

You can see in this photo that Oliver and Squish each have their own bag and have chosen to “claim” their own bag despite other options being nearby. Squish does tend to enjoy being in bags a little more than being on one. This tells me Oliver most likely used this bag earlier and smashed it down first. Oliver never goes in bags, but some of the other cats do. Oliver really likes to lay on top of a bag when one of the other cats are still inside. He is such a prankster!

Oliver loves boxes and bags. This is a twofer!

Oliver probably enjoys paper sacks the most out of all of the cats. It might simply be sometimes he claims a bag and then everybody else just steers clear too. He can be a bully sometimes. Boxes are another Oliver fav and here he has managed the bag/box double stack. This is his “I am very HAPPY!” face.

Lola being creative.

Lola is one of Oliver’s favorite targets. Don’t worry he has been trained to stay upstairs of our bi-level house. This gives Lola free run of the entire downstairs during the day. At night Oliver has a bedroom all to himself so ALL the cats can roam free with no worries. Here Lola has discovered some bags on a piece of work out equipment. She feels more comfortable being up a little higher than just on the floor since she is very shy. As a bonus, she can get in a few reps at the same time!

Squish reenacting her birth. How cute.

Bags are not just for lounging. They can be used as a form of toy/entertainment as well. Here is Squish inside the bag with a hole in it. Most cats would just peek out of the hole…

Squish is making her way out of the “womb”

but this is Squish. Why just peek when you can turn into a super hero and…

TA DA! HERE I AM!

just burst through! Cutest super hero ever!

Murphy finds a bag on the counter. This is a huge find since Oliver has not seen this one yet.

Murphy incognito. Keeping this find on the down low.

Murphy just slides in and keeps things quiet. With any luck he will be able to nap here for a bit before other cats find his new treasure.

Oliver is pretty good at making his bags comfortable and inviting, but sometimes things just don’t work out as planned.

This bag is of inferior quality. Oliver takes his best shot.

Oliver really likes the Trader Joes bags the best. This one is from another store and it’s just not the same. I believe a little later he pees on this bag. His communication skills are quite exceptional don’t you think?

Oliver relaxing?

Here Oliver has missed the landing spot. He does not seem very content about it either. In fact,

Oliver enjoys “playing” with his bag or box.
Oliver enjoying his handy work.

Oliver will chew and tear up bags and boxes when he gets bored, irritated, or in response to getting in trouble and scolded. I think he also does this to let the other cats know this is his bag and if anybody else messes with it that is how they will look after he finishes with them. He is still showing of those wonderful communication skills.

This is when Oliver gets it just right.

It’s impressive how cats can make things look so darn comfortable. Oliver is very pleased with how this bag turned out.

Oliver with 2 bags

Oliver has created a paper bag recliner. He is very comfortable and pleased. There was a box nearby as back up if this project did not pan out.

Murphy on a bag. Apparently, his tail prefers the box.

Cats tend to be happier and behave better when they have things to do and their “spots” to claim and enjoy. It’s great to get cat furniture, towers, beds etc. However, its hard to pass up on things like bags and boxes that are just laying around your house anyway. Some cats like these even better than the expensive stuff. Oliver really likes modifying and tearing up bags and boxes which he can’t really do as much with cat towers and furniture. He really prefers “garbage” for toys too. That story is for another day!
