Get Down to Your Cat’s Level and Watch the Magic
Our pets LOVE IT when their human friends get on the floor with them. They are so used to looking up at us or having to climb up on something to interact that they don’t realize how awesome and fun it can be for the human to come down to them. This may be one of the reasons cats often seem to quickly and easily connect with children. Children are not only much shorter than adults, but they seem to spend a lot of their time on the floor.
This is one of the techniques we use when trying to help a new rescue feel more comfortable. We go into the room they are temporarily in and just sit or even lay down. Just chill, relax, read, listen to the radio on low…whatever works. Sometimes the cat comes out fairly quickly and other cats require multiple times of going in the room and just hanging out on the floor.
This strategy NEVER fails! It’s just a matter of how long it takes. A few minutes, and hour a couple days, or a few days will eventually see success.
Sitting on the floor can lead to extra purring and affection or perhaps extra excitement and some great playing opportunities. You never really know until you try it. And each time can initially be somewhat different. It also depends on the cat and their personality type in terms of how they will react.
Now go have a seat on the floor and we’ll see you next time.
