Your Cat is Peeing OVER the Edge of the Litter Box

There are a Couple of Reasons Why Your Cat is Peeing Over the Litter Box
One reason that your cat is now peeing over the edge of the litter box is because it’s older and can’t squat down as much as it used to. Another reason might be because your cat was young and now it’s grown larger and is taller than before. It could still be peeing the exact same way as before, but now it’s just bigger and taller. A few cats will sometimes just stand straight up and cut loose.
Although this is a problem it’s not time to panic. All litterboxes are NOT the same. When a cat is young and small you can usually get by with almost any old litter box. As they get older and or bigger you may need to get a new type of litter box.
This situation has happened to us several times before. It’s a very messy and smelly problem since the urine usually runs under the box. Now we have to clean the bottom of the box, the floor where the box was, and often the wall behind or near the box. What a MESS!
Once we realized the issue we did some research looking for the least expensive largest litter box we could find. There was no other option for us but to replace all of our boxes. Since we have several, cost was definitely a top consideration.
The litter box type we switched to is this one…
This litter box is not super expensive and it’s over 9 inches high. Most litter boxes are only 4 inches high. What a huge difference! It worked right away. We have had them for quite awhile now and they are easy to clean. Durability has also not been an issue and we always seem to have a couple of cats that really give the litter box quite a workout. No not that way…well ya maybe that too. I’m referring to the cat who paws at the side of the box and the front making all kinds of racket. After all the work and noise they never actually get around to covering it up anyway!
Now you might try a covered litter box, but some cats don’t like those and now you have a cat that isn’t using the box at all. You might have a cat that is fine or actually prefers the cover, but they spray right at the seam of where the top and bottom meet. This often results in pee dribbling down the back or the side. This does not happen with the larger boxes.
We have tried this model for the larger and covered option and it has worked great.
It’s Real Simple. Whatever you Spend to Prevent Accidents from your Cats is Worth It.
The best way to minimize or eliminate cat accidents in the house is to do all you can to prevent them from starting in the first place. Next we will discuss what to do if your cat starts going outside the litter box all together.
