Cats “CLAIM” Their Humans

Cats are very territorial. One of their most favorite things to do is to “mark” their territory. Your kitty is very clever when doing this very important activity. A cat that is close to a human will often rub up against their human in multiple ways to claim ownership of their human! Yep you’ve been had! You thought Fluffy was so adorable, affectionate, and loving. While this is still true, Fluffy is also telling the rest of the world, especially the cat world you belong to her.
Cats have scent glands in their paws, tail, head, face, and mouth. When your cat is rubbing up against you, or pushing their face close to yours, or perhaps kneading their paws on your chest or lap they are putting their scent on you and claiming you. They are basically telling other cats…PAWS OFF! This act is very instinctual for them. They are doing this type of behavior constantly, not just on you, but also on the furniture, doors, steps, toys, and favorite sleeping areas.
Cats are so very tricky with this maneuver. They just work it into their regular routine. And even though some humans know this is part of the game, we are so caught up in the affection and closeness we feel at the moment that we don’t even care. If you have multiple cats that have claimed you, then be prepared for extra attention on a regular basis as one loving cat tries to out do and out scent the other. Just sit back and enjoy.
